Pharmaceutical research companies help make medicines more accessible for patients. We believe that simply developing disease fighting medicines is not enough; Americans must be able to have access to life-saving treatments. To help low-income or uninsured patients receive the medicines they need, today’s pharmaceutical companies have developed a number of assistance programs. A national clearinghouse was launched in April to match eligible patients to programs and has already helped more than one million patients nationally. A similar program, www.RxforWV.org, was launched in April 2004 and more than 44,000 West Virginians have been matched to assistance programs. RxforWV.org is a program that connects qualified, low-income people with programs that provide discount prescription drugs. The mission of www.RxforWV.org is to increase awareness of and enrollment in existing patient assistance programs for those who may be eligible. It offers a single point of access to public and private patient assistance programs. www.RxforWV.org helps low-income, uninsured patients learn about more than 150 company patient assistance programs, access more than 1,200 medicines for free or at a low cost, and learn how to contact government programs for which they may qualify, such as Medicaid, Medicare, or the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.
To help spread the word about the program in West Virginia, more than 15 state and local organizations have partnered with RxforWV.org. These groups include: Alzheimer’s Association-WV Chapter, American Diabetes Association-WV Chapter, Arthritis Foundation-Ohio River Valley Chapter, Central WV Aging Service, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society-WV Chapter, Wellness Council of WV, WV Psychological Association and PhRMA.
Local groups receive additional, donated medicines for those in need. The prescription drug industry provided $55 million dollars worth of products to West Virginia's free clinics between 2004 and 2005, including the Charleston based Health Right clinic at no cost, helping more than 49,000 West Virginians receive the prescription drugs they need.
